Applying for a Bulgarian visa from Türkiye
When applying from Türkiye, the costliest mistake is building the file on the wrong visa type. A short visit and a long-stay settlement application need different documents, are assessed differently, and end differently. The mechanics — appointment, papers, apostille, translation — only make sense once that choice is made.

Type first, documents second
Applications split into two main tracks: a short-stay visa and a long-stay visa for settlement. The first covers the whole visit; the second gives no right to stay on its own but opens the residence procedure inside Bulgaria. The same bundle of documents does not serve both tracks.

Which mission is competent
Applications go to Bulgaria's diplomatic and consular missions in Türkiye. Each covers a consular district made up of specific provinces; check on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs pages which mission covers where you live. Filing outside the district may simply not be accepted. For some procedures the appointment must be booked through the official channel only — bookings made by intermediaries are not always recognised.
Passport type changes the rules
Ordinary, special and service passports issued in Türkiye may fall under different regimes. Verify the rule for your passport with both the Bulgarian and the Turkish foreign ministry. Hearsay is unusually common here and unusually expensive: travelling on a wrong assumption means a cancelled trip.

An apostille does not make a document Bulgarian
The border is not a visa counter
Kapıkule and the other land crossings are transit points, not application points. Travelling in the hope of getting a visa at the border means accepting the risk of being turned back. Border officers can also check entry conditions — purpose, accommodation, means — even when a valid visa is held. A visa is a right to request entry, not a guarantee of it.
Common mistakes when applying from Türkiye
- Hiding a settlement intention behind a short-stay application.
- Going to the nearest city without checking the consular district.
- Attending with documents lacking an apostille or a translation.
- Passport validity too short for the planned stay.
- Trusting an agency's promise of a guaranteed result instead of reading the official notices.

Can I get the visa at the land border?
No. Border crossings do not accept visa applications. The visa is issued by the mission competent for your place of residence.
I am a third-country national living in Türkiye — where do I apply?
Competence follows your place of residence rather than your nationality, but the mission will also look at the lawfulness of your stay in Türkiye. Ask which documents evidence that before booking.
Does a refused Schengen visa affect a Bulgarian application?
Previous refusals may have to be declared and are considered as part of your history. What matters most is consistency: an undeclared or contradicted refusal is itself a reason to refuse.
