Does Bulgaria have a digital nomad visa

The short answer: Bulgaria has no separate visa type called a „digital nomad visa“. That does not mean a remote worker cannot settle there — remote work is defined in the additional provisions of the Foreigners Act and can serve as a ground in a residence application. The distinction matters: someone who sets out believing „there is a special visa“ looks for an application that does not exist, while someone who gives up saying „there is no route“ misses the one that does.

No visa by that name, but a defined concept

In recent years several European countries created permits or visas that explicitly carry the name „digital nomad“. Bulgaria did not announce a separate category under that name. Instead there is a definition placing remote work among the usable grounds: the additional provisions of the Foreigners Act describe persons who provide services remotely through the use of information technologies.

The scope of that definition is narrow, and it decides who is in and who is out. The definition sets out two cases. The first is a person employed under an employment contract by an employer registered or established outside the European Union, the European Economic Area or Switzerland, who provides services remotely through information technologies. The second is a legal representative, member of the management body, owner, partner or shareholder holding more than twenty-five per cent of the capital of a company registered outside those same states, who through that company provides services remotely and does not perform work or provide services to persons on the territory of Bulgaria.

Definition taken on 23 August 2026 — confirm the name on an official page

The definition above was taken from the General Labour Inspectorate page publishing the additional provisions of the Foreigners Act and from the Bulgaria pages of the European Commission migration portal, on 23 August 2026. Which point among the residence grounds this definition attaches to, and whether a separate visa type named „digital nomad“ exists, must be confirmed before applying on the pages of the Migration Directorate and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Legislation changes; this page describes what was measured on that day.
The heart of the definition is where the employer or company is established, not where the work is done from.
CaseWho falls within itLimit
Remote worker under an employment contractEmployee of an employer registered outside the EU, EEA or SwitzerlandThe service is provided remotely through information technologies
Company owner or managerLegal representative, member of the management body, partner or holder of more than twenty-five per cent of the capital of a company outside the same perimeterNo work performed and no services provided to persons on Bulgarian territory

The route is the same: visa first, residence second

Because the remote work ground creates no separate visa type, a third-country national's route is the same as on any other ground and has two stages. In the first, a long-stay visa is issued by a Bulgarian diplomatic mission abroad; the visa grants a right of entry, not a right to stay. In the second, after entry, a residence application is filed with the Migration Directorate of the Ministry of Interior, and the residence card is born there.

Breaking that sequence is the most common mistake remote workers make. Arriving on a visa-free right of entry or on a tourist visa and then trying to open a „remote work residence“ inside the country does not, as a rule, work. A right of short stay is not the ground for a long-stay residence application.

The same three conditions apply here too

The remote work ground does not soften the common conditions of the file. The applicant shows they can support themselves throughout the stay without recourse to social assistance; documents their accommodation; and holds compulsory health insurance valid on Bulgarian territory. Here too the subsistence threshold is not a fixed figure and cannot fall below the minimum monthly wage.

The practical difficulty for remote workers lies elsewhere: income usually comes from a foreign employer or from one's own company, and evidencing it is not as straightforward as a payslip. The contract, payment records, bank statements and, where needed, the company's incorporation documents are submitted together. The weakest link is usually the point where „the income exists but a regular flow cannot be shown“.

Three alternative routes

A remote worker wishing to settle in Bulgaria does not face a single option. The three routes below work differently for different people, and the choice depends on how the work is actually structured.

The route also changes tax and social security outcomes; the decision is not made on ease of residence alone.
RouteFor whomWhat it requires
Remote work groundSomeone working with an employer or company outside the EU, EEA and SwitzerlandLong-stay visa, then a residence application to the Migration Directorate
Freelance practiceSomeone who will work in their own name in BulgariaEmployment Agency permit, long-stay visa and residence application
Setting up a company in BulgariaSomeone who will operate through a local legal entityCompany registration and a residence ground attached to it
Free movementCitizen of the EU, EEA or SwitzerlandNo visa; registration with the administration suffices

The second and third rows are often confused. Freelance practice means working in your own name and is tied to a permit from the Employment Agency. Setting up a company means creating a separate legal entity and attaching your residence to it; that route brings its own accounting, tax and social security burdens. For a remote worker, the company route marketed as „the easiest way“ is most often the one that creates the most obligations.

If you are an EU citizen the question does not arise

If you are a citizen of the EU, the European Economic Area or Switzerland, you need no visa type at all in order to work remotely. You hold a right of free movement; once your stay in Bulgaria passes a certain threshold, what is required is not a permit application but registration with the administration. The question „does Bulgaria have a digital nomad visa“ is therefore moot for an EU citizen.

When you see a „digital nomad visa“ advertisement

This is one of the most productive topics for immigration consultancy sites, where the phrase „Bulgaria Digital Nomad Visa“ often reads like a product name. When you see such a heading there is one question to ask: on which official page does that name appear. If the answer is a consultancy site, the name was produced for marketing; the actual application will still be for a long-stay visa and a residence permit.

The distinction has a price. Hunting for an appointment for a visa type that does not exist costs weeks; worse, a file opened on the wrong ground is refused and the fee paid does not come back. The right move is to read the ground that fits your situation on the Migration Directorate's service page before you apply.

Tax is a separate question

For remote workers the difference between a residence permit and tax residence is even more critical than for pensioners, because the income touches more than one country. The permit gives you the right to stay; it does not by itself determine where your income is taxed. Days spent in the country, the centre of vital interests and double taxation treaties all shape that outcome, and those subjects are covered in separate articles on this site.

The same applies to social security: when you work for a foreign employer, which country's system receives the contributions is a question independent of the residence permit. Anyone considering settlement on a remote work ground should seek answers to both questions before opening the file.

This is not legal or financial advice

Frequently asked questions

Does Bulgaria have a digital nomad visa?

There is no separate visa type by that name. Remote work is defined in the additional provisions of the Foreigners Act, and the application still runs through a long-stay visa and a residence application. Confirm the current position on the Migration Directorate and Ministry of Foreign Affairs pages.

My employer is in the European Union. Do I fall within the definition?

The definition requires the employer or company to be registered outside the European Union, the European Economic Area and Switzerland. If your employer is inside that perimeter, this ground does not apply and another ground must be found.

Can I enter as a tourist and apply inside the country?

As a rule, no. The route has two stages: a long-stay visa issued abroad, then a residence application to the Migration Directorate after entry.

I am an EU citizen. Do I need a visa to work remotely?

No. You hold a right of free movement; once you pass a certain period what is required is registration, not a permit.
