Income required for Bulgarian residence
No provision says „you need this many euros a month“, and any source that gives you a precise figure is adding something of its own. The law sets a rule: the foreign national must show they can support themselves throughout the period of stay without recourse to the social assistance system, and the amount required cannot be lower than the minimum monthly wage, the minimum scholarship or the minimum pension under Bulgarian law. This article explains that rule, the 2026 reference amounts it hangs on, and what the administration looks for in income.

The law sets a floor, not a figure
The foreigners' legislation defines the subsistence requirement not by an absolute amount but by tying it to social references in the country. The reason is practical: a fixed figure would need amending with every wave of inflation. Instead, the threshold is anchored to three values that update themselves each year — the minimum monthly wage, the minimum scholarship and the minimum pension. Which one applies depends on your ground of residence: wage for a worker, scholarship for a student, pension for a retired person.
Two consequences follow. First, „sufficient means“ is a lower boundary rather than a number — you need to be above it, not exactly on it. Second, the threshold rises on 1 January, and in some years mid-year as well; income that was sufficient last year can sit on the edge this year.
The 2026 reference amounts
Amounts taken on 23 August 2026
| Reference | 2026 value | Set by |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum monthly gross wage | 620,20 € | Council of Ministers — Decree No. 243 of 13.11.2025 |
| Minimum pension, 1 January – 30 June 2026 | 322,37 € | State social insurance budget act |
| Minimum pension, from 1 July 2026 | 347,51 € | Amendment to the budget act / Ministry of Labour |
| Minimum scholarship | Set by act of the Council of Ministers | Council of Ministers |
The minimum scholarship row is deliberately without a figure. Its amount is set by an act of the Council of Ministers and varies with the academic year; the text of the current act could not be verified while this article was prepared, so no number is written here. If you are applying on a student ground, take the value from the act itself or from your university's student office.
The quality of income counts as much as the amount
The administration looks not at a one-off balance in your account but at the durability of income. The terms the legislation uses point to stable, regular, foreseeable and sufficient means. In practice: a large sum that arrived a week before filing weighs less than a statement showing an even inflow across twelve months. For the same reason cash income is something the administration cannot see — and invisible income is non-existent income.
The source need not be in Bulgaria. A foreign pension, rental income, company profit or income from remote work can all be accepted; what is required is that the source be documentable and continuous. Documents from foreign institutions, however, must pass through the translation and legalisation chain, and that is what stretches the calendar.
Documents that evidence income
- Bank statement — preferably covering several consecutive months rather than a single date.
- Pension decision or payment document — with translation and legalisation if issued by a foreign institution.
- Employment contract and payslips — the core document on an employment ground.
- Company income documents — profit distribution, manager's remuneration or a tax return.
- Lease agreements and records of rent received.
- Scholarship decision or an undertaking of support by another person — on a student ground.
This is not a checklist: which documents are requested depends on your ground, and the definitive list is on the Migration Directorate's own service page. The point here is different — to show what kind of evidence carries weight. A document showing duration is always stronger than a single balance.
How the threshold grows for a family
The most common question in a family application is about a fixed multiplier: „fifty per cent for a spouse, thirty for a child“. The legislation sets no such multiplier, and because it does not, none is written here. The rule stays the same: the household must be able to support itself throughout the period without recourse to social assistance. The administration assesses that by looking at household size, accommodation and the source of income together.
In practice, income at the level of the minimum wage may be accepted for one person and found insufficient for a household of four. For a family file the right question is not „what is the multiplier“ but „will this household live on this income in this city without asking for assistance“.
Income alone is not enough: accommodation and health insurance
The subsistence requirement does not stand alone in the legislation; two further conditions sit beside it. The first is accommodation: the place where the foreign national will live must be documented, and that document is also the basis of address registration. The second is compulsory health insurance valid on Bulgarian territory. The three are parts of one logic — that no public support will be needed for shelter, health or subsistence during the stay.
Thinking about them separately weakens the file. High income without an accommodation document leaves the file incomplete; insurance in place with irregular income does the same. The administration reads all three together.
Six common mistakes
- Proving income with one large transfer. Without duration the amount alone does not convince.
- Sitting exactly on the boundary. The threshold can rise during the year and leave a renewal file below it.
- Submitting foreign documents without translation and legalisation.
- Explaining cash income verbally. Undocumented income does not exist in the file.
- Assuming a fixed family multiplier. There is no multiplier in the legislation, only assessment.
- Proving income but skipping accommodation or insurance. All three are required together.
The threshold moves by itself every year
Tying the threshold to the minimum wage and the minimum pension has one very practical consequence: it rises without you doing anything. The minimum wage is set by decree, usually in November, and takes effect on 1 January; the minimum pension changes with the budget act, sometimes mid-year, as happened in 2026. Preparing a renewal file on last year's figure is the quietest kind of mistake.
The right habit is simple: before every renewal, read two pages again — the minimum wage announcement and the pension amounts announcement. Those two pages define your threshold and they change at least once a year.

Frequently asked questions
How much monthly income is required for residence?
The legislation sets no fixed figure. The income required cannot be lower than the minimum monthly wage, the minimum scholarship or the minimum pension under Bulgarian law. In 2026 the minimum monthly gross wage is 620,20 € and the minimum pension from 1 July is 347,51 €.
Is income from abroad accepted?
The source need not be in Bulgaria. What matters is that the income be stable, regular and documentable. Documents from foreign institutions pass through translation and legalisation.
How much does the threshold multiply for a family?
The legislation sets no fixed multiplier. The administration assesses household size, accommodation and the source of income together. For a household of four, a single-person threshold may be found insufficient.
Do savings in a bank account count as income?
Savings alone do not replace regular income. The administration looks at flow; a one-off balance does not carry the weight of a record showing monthly inflows.
