How long you can stay in Bulgaria without a visa
For nationals of visa-exempt countries, short stays in Bulgaria are capped by a rule fixed in EU law: 90 days within any 180-day period. This is not an annual allowance of three months but a balance inside a rolling window — and that is exactly where most breaches begin.

Who it applies to
Visa-free stay depends on nationality and does not apply to every country. EU, EEA and Swiss citizens sit outside the rule entirely: their right comes from free movement and is measured on different logic. Some third-country nationals are exempt from a visa for short stays and some are not. Check the regime for your own nationality on the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs pages; the lists change and second-hand summaries online go stale quickly.

A misconception: the border run
Some people believe that leaving and re-entering the same day resets the count. It does not. The window is rolling and looks backwards, so a new entry does not erase days already used. What is checked is not the freshness of a stamp but the total days within the period. People who repeat this cycle can be refused entry and have the breach recorded.
Consequences of overstaying
- An administrative penalty on exit and a recorded breach.
- An entry ban for a set period, which may affect the whole common area rather than Bulgaria alone.
- Negative weight in later visa and residence procedures.
- A pending residence application weakened or lost.
- A separate administrative procedure needed to have a ban lifted.

If you need to stay longer
Short stays are not extended as a matter of course; the exceptions are narrow, tied to force-majeure situations, and never automatic — they must be requested, evidenced and decided. If you intend to remain, the correct route is not stretching the limit but building a residence ground and going back to the start of the chain. Steps taken after the limit has passed often cost you the best option you still had.

Frequently asked questions
Does leaving and coming back reset the counter?
No. The window rolls backwards over the past 180 days, and a new entry does not erase days already used. Relying on border runs can lead to a breach.
Can I work remotely for a foreign employer during a visa-free stay?
The short-stay right does not grant access to the labour market, and remote work can raise tax and status questions of its own. Check the rules for your situation before assuming it is neutral.
Do days spent in other countries of the area count?
Yes. The balance is shared across the common area, so time in a neighbouring country reduces the days you have left for Bulgaria.
