Two kinds of land border, two regimes

What 'no checks' means on an internal border

Crossing into Greece or Romania, you do not pass a permanent booth where every vehicle stops and every document is read. Police and customs powers, however, remain intact: targeted checks in the border area and inland are lawful, and customs continues to exercise its own competence over goods and cash. Schengen rules also permit internal controls to be reintroduced temporarily in the face of a serious threat, and such measures are formally notified.

What happens at an external border

• •The travel document is checked for validity and authenticity.
• •Entry conditions are assessed: purpose of stay, accommodation, means of subsistence and, where required, a valid visa or residence document.
• •Entries and exits of third-country nationals are recorded, and the record counts for the whole area rather than for Bulgaria alone.
• •Goods follow a separate procedure: customs declarations, cash declaration rules and vehicle checks derive from customs law, not from Schengen.
• •Driving licence, vehicle registration and valid motor insurance may be requested when crossing by car.

Preparation before you reach the crossing

   Keep documents together

   Passport or identity card, residence document if you hold one, and for a car the registration certificate, driving licence and valid insurance.

   Know which document proves your status

   A residence card, a visa and a passport each prove something different. If your card is being renewed, carry the decision confirming it.

   Check whether you are carrying anything declarable

   Cash, commercial goods, animals, plants, medicines and weapons follow separate rules. Learning the rule at the barrier is the expensive way; check the customs agency page first.

   Look up the crossing's current status

   Opening arrangements, roadworks and congestion notices are published by the border police. This page deliberately gives no waiting times — they change hour by hour.

Three common misconceptions

The first is assuming Schengen membership covers the Turkish border too. The second is treating the absence of internal checks as permission to travel without identification; carrying an identity document is a separate obligation. The third is assuming days spent in Bulgaria are counted separately from days spent elsewhere in the area. Short-stay entitlement is a single allowance across the whole area, and the arithmetic behind it is covered on its own page.

For regular travellers from Turkey

Kapitan Andreevo remains an external crossing, and the volume of checks there did not fall with accession. What did change is the onward journey: once lawfully admitted, you continue into Greece or Romania without a further border check, which is most noticeable on transit routes.
