Bulgaria in Schengen: what changed at the border
Bulgaria joined the Schengen area in two stages: at its air and sea borders on 31 March 2024, and at its land borders on 1 January 2025. The effect runs in two directions at once — systematic checks disappeared on the borders with other Schengen states, while the borders with Türkiye and Serbia became the external frontier of the EU. The two regimes work on completely different rules.

Schengen membership and EU membership are different things
The EU is a legal and economic union; Schengen is a travel area without internal border controls. The two do not overlap neatly: Norway, Iceland, Switzerland and Liechtenstein take part in Schengen without being in the EU, while Ireland is in the EU but outside Schengen. Bulgaria had been an EU member since 2007 yet only entered Schengen seventeen years later — which is why "it's in the EU, so there is no border" was wrong for years.
Why accession happened in two stages
Air and sea borders — 31 March 2024
Passport checks ended at airports and ports for journeys to and from other Schengen states. A Sofia to Vienna flight began to work, in practice, like a domestic one.Land borders — 1 January 2025
Systematic border checks ended on crossings with Greece and Romania. The double passport and customs control that caused the long freight queues disappeared on those routes.External border responsibility grew
The borders with Türkiye and Serbia remain the external frontier of the EU and Schengen. Checks there not only continue, they are carried out on behalf of the whole area.
What actually changed when you travel
- There is no passport control on intra-Schengen flights; the airline's own identity check is a separate matter and still applies.
- There are no systematic checks at the Greek and Romanian land crossings, but police and customs retain the power to carry out targeted controls.
- Dropping internal checks does not remove the duty to carry identification; holders of a residence permit should carry that as well.
- Schengen rules allow internal border controls to be reintroduced temporarily on serious security grounds, and that exception is used from time to time.
The Turkish border is now an EU external border
Full external border control applies at Kapitan Andreevo–Kapıkule, Lesovo–Hamzabeyli and Malko Tarnovo–Dereköy: passport, entry conditions, a visa where one is required, and customs declaration. Entry and exit records for third-country nationals are kept for the Schengen area as a whole. A day spent in Bulgaria therefore counts the same as a day spent in Italy; there is no separate allowance per country.
What it means for visas
For short stays Bulgaria now issues visas under Schengen rules, and a valid short-stay visa issued by another member state also allows entry. The long-stay D visa remains a national document, issued only by Bulgaria's own diplomatic missions abroad. Who needs a visa at all is decided at EU level and depends on your passport.

Frequently asked questions
Did passport control disappear entirely once Bulgaria joined Schengen?
No. Systematic checks ended on internal borders with other Schengen states, but controls continue in full at external borders such as those with Türkiye and Serbia.
Will I be stopped driving from Greece into Bulgaria?
There is no systematic border check, but police and customs keep the power to run targeted controls. Carry your identity document, driving licence and vehicle papers.
Is a visa issued by another Schengen country valid in Bulgaria?
A short-stay Schengen visa is as a rule valid throughout the area. A national long-stay visa or residence card issued by another member state also permits short trips within Schengen; check the details with the consulate of the issuing country.
