Your first steps after arriving in Bulgaria
The difficulty of the first weeks in Bulgaria is not the number of tasks but how they depend on each other. Almost every step needs the output of the previous one: without address registration there is no personal number, without a number no bank account, and without an account the payroll and insurance chain stalls. Knowing the order saves you from queueing twice at the same counter.

The logic of the chain
The early tasks are a sequence rather than a list, and the sequence is set by what each institution demands of the previous one. That is why „which should I do first“ has no personal answer: the chain runs in the same direction for nearly everyone, and only the counters differ by status.

Nothing moves without a housing document — title deed, rental contract or the owner's consent. Registration is filed with the municipality.Residence registration and personal number

- A mobile number and internet connection — many institutions communicate by message.
- Transferring electricity, water and heating accounts into your name.
- Nursery or school enrolment for children.
- Setting up an accepted means of electronic identification.
- Scanning and organising documents, since the same paper is asked for in many places.
The three costliest mistakes
First, postponing address registration: it starts the chain, so any delay travels down it. Second, inconsistent spelling of names across documents — once records fail to match, registrations do not open. Third, carrying a single copy of a document, because in many procedures the original stays in the file.

As an EU citizen, is the sequence different for me?
The direction is the same, but you register your residence under free-movement rules rather than applying for a permit. The counters and the document differ; the dependency between address, number and bank does not.
Can I open a bank account before registering my address?
In practice it is very difficult, because identification relies on a personal number and address data. Starting with the address registration is faster than trying to work around it.
