Collecting a Bulgarian residence card
In Bulgaria the decision on your residence and the moment the card reaches your hand are two different events. In between sit the capture of biometric data, the production of the document and its personal collection. During that gap your status already exists, but banks, employers and schools usually want to see the card — so it pays to know exactly which document you are holding.

Decision and document are separate stages
A favourable outcome is an administrative act. The card is its physical expression and goes through a separate document-issuing procedure. While the card is being produced your status exists, yet third parties tend to rely on the card. Ask the receiving office which document you hold in the meantime and where it is accepted.
The steps
Decision, then a document request
After the decision, a separate request for the residence document is filed. It is not the same as your original application.Biometric capture

As a rule the holder collects the card. Special rules apply to children and to a small number of other situations, set by the issuing office.
What to check at the counter
- The Latin spelling of your names must match your passport exactly.
- The personal number (ЛНЧ or ЕГН) must agree with your other registrations.
- The legal ground shown must match the category you applied under.
- The validity dates must be consistent with the decision.
- The address data must not contradict your address registration.
Lost, stolen or damaged cards
Loss and theft are declared to a police unit, after which a request for a replacement is filed. A physically damaged card is also a ground for reissue. Delaying the declaration leaves the risk of misuse with you, so the declaration comes first and the new application second.

As an EU citizen, do I get the same kind of card?
EU, EEA and Swiss citizens register their residence and receive a certificate reflecting that registration rather than a permit in the third-country sense. The counter and the document differ, so confirm which procedure applies to you before queuing.
Can I travel while the card is being produced?
That depends on your legal ground and the documents you currently hold. Check with the migration authority before you travel; an assumption here can complicate your return.
The name on the card is spelled differently from my passport — does it matter?
Yes. Ask for a correction before you start using it. Mismatched Latin spellings cause matching failures at banks, land registry and payroll, and are far harder to unpick later.
