How to read Cyrillic: a seven-day plan

Thirty letters, four families

The Bulgarian alphabet has thirty letters: А Б В Г Д Е Ж З И Й К Л М Н О П Р С Т У Ф Х Ц Ч Ш Щ Ъ Ь Ю Я. Memorising that sequence in order is the slowest possible route, because the letters are not equally difficult. Split by learning load, the job shrinks to a few days.

One example shows why family two matters most. The sign ВХОД read with Latin values looks like nonsense; read correctly it is vhod, "entrance". Until those six letters are fixed, every sign is misread — and misread without the reader noticing.

The seven-day plan

1. 1

   Day 1 — families one and two

   Twelve letters. Recognise the first six, then write the six false friends out by hand with their real sound beside them. That is the whole day.
2. 2

   Day 2 — first street round

   No new letters. Go out and find words made only of those twelve: МЕТРО, ТАКСИ, БАНКА, РЕСТОРАНТ. Reading a word you already know, in the new script, is what makes the letters stick.
3. 3

   Day 3 — family three, first half

   Б Г Д Ж З И Й Л. Several will be familiar from mathematics or Greek. Attach one real word to each letter.
4. 4

   Day 4 — family three, second half

   П Ф Ц Ч Ш Ю Я. The sounds mostly exist in English already; only the shapes are new.
5. 5

   Day 5 — family four

   Щ is read as sht. Ъ is a genuine vowel in Bulgarian and appears in the country's own name: България. Ь makes no sound of its own and only softens a preceding consonant before О.
6. 6

   Day 6 — real text

   Read a receipt, a bill header, a bus route board and a pharmacy sign. Do not try to understand them — just sound them out. Not knowing the words is fine; the alphabet lesson ends here and the vocabulary lesson is separate.
7. 7

   Day 7 — writing

   Add a Bulgarian keyboard to your phone, look at a handwriting sample, and write your own address in Cyrillic. Reading and writing are two different skills, and forms require the second.

The street is the best workbook

Real text shows letters in patterns rather than in isolation, and patterns are learned far faster. Four sources give the best return: transport signage, supermarket shelves, opening-hours notices on institution doors, and the top section of utility bills. All four repeat a small, fixed set of words, which produces natural spaced repetition without any effort on your part.

The abbreviations that fill every address

Handwriting is a second alphabet

In Cyrillic cursive several letters bear no resemblance to their printed forms; т, д, п and г are the usual offenders. Someone who reads street signs comfortably may still be unable to read a handwritten form or a doctor's note. Two practical rules follow: fill in your own forms in block capitals, which is accepted everywhere, and when handed something handwritten, ask the writer to read it aloud rather than deciphering it yourself.

Typing Cyrillic

• •On a phone, add the Bulgarian keyboard in system settings and switch by holding the space bar.
• •On a computer there are two layouts. The traditional layout places letters by Bulgarian typing frequency; the phonetic layout maps each Latin key to the corresponding Cyrillic letter. For a beginner the phonetic layout is faster by a wide margin.
• •When searching, type place names in Cyrillic. Latin spellings of the same place vary between sources; the Cyrillic form does not.
• •On official forms, always use the Latin spelling of your name exactly as it appears in your passport. Inconsistent spellings across documents are painful to correct later.
