Essential Bulgarian words: which ones and in what order
Every search for "basic Bulgarian words" returns a long list, and long lists share one flaw: they are read rather than learned. Words stick inside situations, not inside alphabetical columns. This page does not enumerate hundreds of words. It gives seven situations with a handful of words each, three frames that generate sentences, and the words that most reliably mislead. The list itself belongs in a separate tool, not in the middle of an article.

Why word lists fail
Three reasons. Lists are ordered alphabetically or arbitrarily, while memory stores words by context. Lists carry no sound, and Bulgarian stress is mobile — a word learned with the wrong stress stays wrong. And lists show words in isolation, while real life delivers them inside frames; knowing the word without the frame still leaves you unable to speak.
Seven situations, a handful of words each
1. Greetings and courtesy
здравей (informal hello) · здравейте (formal hello) · добър ден (good day) · моля (please, you are welcome, here you are) · благодаря (thank you) · извинете (excuse me) · довиждане (goodbye). моля alone does three jobs and is the word you will hear most.2. When you do not understand
да (yes) · не (no) · не разбирам (I do not understand) · говорите ли английски (do you speak English) · по-бавно, моля (slower, please) · как се казва това (what is this called). These six are your exit from any situation and belong to day one.3. Shopping
колко струва (how much) · имате ли (do you have) · това (this) · каса (checkout) · торбичка (bag) · сметка (bill) · с карта (by card). Prices are quoted in euro, so understanding numbers matters more than vocabulary here.4. Directions
къде е (where is) · наляво (left) · надясно (right) · направо (straight ahead) · близо (near) · далече (far) · тук (here) · там (there).5. Transport
билет (ticket) · спирка (stop) · гара (railway station) · влак (train) · автобус (bus) · кога тръгва (when does it leave) · до (to). The frame билет до plus a place name is enough to buy any ticket.6. Health and emergencies
боли ме (it hurts) · лекар (doctor) · аптека (pharmacy) · спешно (urgent) · помощ (help) · линейка (ambulance) · алергия (allergy). Learn this group in week one; there is no time to learn it when you need it.7. Institutions and paperwork
документи (documents) · подпис (signature) · гише (counter) · срок (deadline) · номер (number) · заявление (application) · такса (fee). These seven are the shared language of every queue from the municipality to the bank.
Three frames, hundreds of sentences

Words that mislead

Politeness comes before grammar
- The formal and informal you are real. ти is informal, Вие formal. Use Вие with strangers, officials, doctors and anyone older. Choosing wrong reads as rudeness, not as a grammar slip.
- Greet on entering a small shop. Saying добър ден at the door, before reaching the counter, is standard; walking in silently reads as cold.
- наздраве accompanies a raised glass, with eye contact expected.
- Head gestures may run opposite to what you expect. When in doubt, listen for да or не rather than watching the head.

How many words should I learn in the first week?
Set a situation target rather than a word count. Fully covering two of the seven situations above — courtesy and not-understanding — does more real work than scattering two hundred words across a notebook.
How do I get pronunciation right?
By listening, not by reading transcriptions. Bulgarian stress is mobile and cannot be predicted from spelling, so every new word should be heard at least once before it is used.
