Learning to read Cyrillic in Bulgaria

For most new arrivals the first obstacle in Bulgaria is not the language but the script. Learning to read Cyrillic takes a few days and pays off immediately: bus destination boards, price labels, pharmacy signs and invoice headers all become legible. What follows is where the alphabet came from, then the letters that mislead Latin readers most.

Where the alphabet comes from

The first Slavic script devised by the brothers Cyril and Methodius was Glagolitic. The Cyrillic alphabet in use today was shaped by their disciples in the literary schools of the First Bulgarian State — around Preslav and Ohrid — and spread from there to the other Orthodox Slavic peoples. That origin underlies the country's most visible cultural holiday: 24 May is celebrated as the day of the Slavic script and Bulgarian culture. With Bulgaria's accession, Cyrillic became one of the European Union's official writing systems.

The letters that mislead Latin readers

The first six rows look like Latin letters but are read differently; the rest have no single-letter Latin equivalent.

Two things specific to Bulgarian

  • Ъ is a real vowel here. In Russian the same character is a silent hard sign; in Bulgarian it carries a sound and appears in the country's own name, България.
  • Щ is read "sht". ПОЩА is "poshta" and ЛЕТИЩЕ is "letishte". Anyone applying Russian pronunciation will get this wrong, and it shows up frequently in place names.
  • There is no ы, э or ё. The Bulgarian alphabet does not use them, and и is always read as "ee".

The words worth knowing on day one

  • At a door: ВХОД (entrance), ИЗХОД (exit), ОТВОРЕНО (open), ЗАТВОРЕНО (closed), РЕМОНТ (works in progress).
  • On the move: СПИРКА (stop), ГАРА (railway station), ЛЕТИЩЕ (airport), ЦЕНТЪР (centre), ВНИМАНИЕ (caution).
  • While shopping: ЦЕНА (price), НАМАЛЕНИЕ (discount), ХЛЯБ (bread), МЛЯКО (milk), ВОДА (water).
  • When needed: АПТЕКА (pharmacy), БОЛНИЦА (hospital), ПОЩА (post office), БАНКА (bank), ТОАЛЕТНА (toilet).

What a week of practice actually buys you

The gain is orientation rather than vocabulary: reading the route written on the front of a bus, telling unit prices apart on a shelf, pressing the right button on a cash machine, recognising from an invoice header which utility sent it, and spotting your own street name in a contract. None of that requires knowing Bulgarian — only recognising the letters.

Handwriting is effectively a second alphabet

In Cyrillic cursive the letters т, д, п and г look nothing like their printed forms, which makes a handwritten form far harder to read than a shop sign. Filling official forms in block capitals is accepted and avoids the confusion entirely.

How long does it take to read Cyrillic?

A few days at half an hour a day. Most letters map onto a familiar sound; the real work is memorising the small set of misleading characters listed in the table above.

Is Bulgarian Cyrillic the same as Russian Cyrillic?

No. Bulgarian has no ы, э or ё; Ъ is a vowel rather than a silent sign; Щ is read "sht". Someone who knows Russian can decode the text but will mispronounce it until those differences are corrected.

Can I type Cyrillic on my phone?

Yes — a Bulgarian keyboard is added from system settings on both iOS and Android. When a form asks for the Latin spelling of a name, use the spelling in the passport: inconsistent spellings across documents cause problems later.
