Sofia University: what to check and where

Sofia University (Софийски университет „Св. Климент Охридски“) is one of the universities in Bulgaria's capital; its main building is listed among Sofia's architectural monuments on the Sofia Tourism Administration portal, at 15 Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard. This page does not praise or rank the school and does not quote quotas or fees; it shows which official record each piece of information should be read from.

Where accreditation is recorded

Higher education institutions in Bulgaria are entered in the Register of Higher Education Institutions (Регистър на висшите училища), which NACID keeps on behalf of the Minister of Education. According to the centre's page, it is an electronic database covering the institutions, their main units and branches, their professional fields and specialities, their accreditation assessments and the validity periods of those assessments. Whether a programme is accredited is read from this record, not from a marketing page.

What to do before applying

  1. Look up the university and the programme in the register

Find the university and the speciality you are interested in on the register portal and note how long the accreditation is valid.
  2. Read the university's own website

The primary source for the programme list, admission conditions, language of instruction, exam calendar and fees is the university's own site. Such details change every year, so this guide does not copy amounts or dates.
  3. Ask which language the programme is taught in

Within one university, programmes in Bulgarian and in a foreign language can run under different conditions; confirm in writing which one you are applying to.
  4. Learn the recognition route in Turkey beforehand

Recognition of foreign diplomas in Turkey runs through the equivalence portal of the Council of Higher Education (YÖK). We did not see a list of recognised foreign schools on its home page, so asking the institution in writing about your specific programme is the safest route.

No rankings, quotas or fees here

This page gives no university ranking, quota, fee or success rate. These change every year and can only be read from the relevant institution's current page.

The city side

To place the school within the city, the Sofia Tourism Administration portal is useful: it describes the metro, buses, trains and airport links. For daily life, rents and districts see the related articles; the student visa and residence are a separate subject covered in a separate article.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find out whether Sofia University is accredited?

In NACID's Register of Higher Education Institutions, which holds the entries for institutions, programmes and accreditation validity periods.

Will my diploma be valid in Turkey after graduation?

That is assessed programme by programme in the equivalence procedure of the Council of Higher Education in Turkey. No result can be promised; asking the institution in writing before you apply is advisable.
