English-taught programmes at Bulgarian universities

English-taught bachelor's and master's programmes in Bulgaria span medicine and dentistry, engineering, economics and management. But "English-taught programme" is not a uniform category, and the same name at two universities can hide very different structures.

Where they are common

  • Health subjects: English versions of medicine, dentistry and pharmacy are well established and carry large international cohorts.
  • Engineering and computing: technical universities run bachelor's and master's programmes in English.
  • Economics, management and international relations: the choice is widest at master's level.
  • Arts and architecture: it varies by programme, with smaller intakes.

Verify accreditation yourself

Teaching in English confers no value by itself; accreditation does. The registers of higher education institutions and programmes are kept by НАЦИД and are the basis for recognition decisions. Marketing copy on a university website and the entry in the register can diverge. The check takes minutes and prevents most of the recognition problems that surface after graduation.

The language certificate question

  1. Read which document the programme accepts

    Some institutions require an international certificate, some run their own test, some accept evidence that prior study was in English.

  2. Check the validity period

    Language test results can expire and must be valid at the moment of application.

  3. Ask about the second language

    On health programmes English alone is not enough; Bulgarian sits inside the curriculum.

  4. Get written confirmation

    Keep the correspondence about admission conditions; verbal information is not a basis for anything.

The part the label leaves out

English-taught programmes usually sit under a separate fee regime, and state-funded place logic works differently there. Beyond that, two practical issues follow: placements and daily life. Practical training happens in Bulgarian institutions and largely in Bulgarian, and administrative life — a tenancy agreement, utilities, official correspondence — runs in Bulgarian too. The programme solves lectures, not living in the country.

Frequently asked questions

Is a degree from an English-taught programme valued less?

Accreditation and the institution's status decide, not the language of instruction. The same accredited programme leads to the same degree.

Do I need Bulgarian for an English-taught master's?

Usually not for the taught part. But if your dissertation requires working with local institutions or data, the language becomes a practical obstacle.

Can I transfer into the Bulgarian-taught version later?

Internal transfer rules exist but nothing is automatic; language proficiency and curriculum alignment are both required.
