Applying to a Bulgarian university
There is no single central admissions gate in Bulgaria: the university decides admission, while recognition of a foreign diploma and the procedure for non-EU applicants run through МОН and НАЦИД. Getting the order wrong costs an academic year.

Language requirement and preparatory year
Programmes taught in Bulgarian require language proficiency, and applicants without it can take a preparatory year: language plus subject courses, followed by entry to the programme. English-taught programmes ask either for a language certificate or for the university's own test. How long the preparatory year runs, what document it produces and whether progression is automatic all vary — three questions worth asking in writing before paying anything.

- Admission is decided by the university; no agent can guarantee a place.
- Verify the programme's accreditation yourself in the НАЦИД higher education registers.
- Pay the institution directly wherever possible and keep the payment document.
- Whether the degree will be recognised in your home country is a separate question that no Bulgarian university answers.

Frequently asked questions
I hold an EU passport but studied outside the EU. Which route applies?
The citizenship route decides how you apply, and the diploma route decides whether your qualification is accepted. So you apply on EU terms while still going through recognition of a non-EU school certificate — the two are independent and both must be completed.
Can I apply while still in my final school year?
Many universities accept conditional applications, but final enrolment depends on the diploma and the recognition decision. A conditional letter alone may not satisfy a visa procedure.
Can I change programme after admission?
Internal transfer rules exist but nothing is automatic. For non-EU students a change can affect the residence basis, so speak to the international office first.
