Admission in Bulgaria is decided by each university rather than by one nationwide examination. That makes "no entrance exam" technically accurate and practically misleading: there are always criteria.

Who sets the criteria

Every institution publishes its own admission conditions. They may involve a candidate examination, the school leaving grade, the state matriculation result, or a recognised international examination. Several programmes accept more than one of these and let the applicant choose the more favourable route. For competitive subjects an examination is in practice always present.

How to read "no exam"

  • True: there is no single national admission exam covering all programmes.
  • False: enrolment happens without assessment — the leaving grade is itself a ranking criterion.
  • Omitted: recognition of secondary education is a separate mandatory step.
  • Passed over quietly: the language requirement, whether proficiency in Bulgarian or a certificate for English-taught study.
  • Arrives later: how the degree will be treated in another country, which no Bulgarian university decides.

How to verify

  1. Read the institution's own announcement

    That text binds, not an agency brochure.

  2. Check accreditation in the НАЦИД registers

    A document from an unaccredited programme causes trouble at every later step.

  3. Start recognition early

    Recognition of secondary education runs separately from admission and usually takes longer.

  4. Ask about your post-graduation goal first

    If you intend to work in another country, ask its competent authority before enrolling.

Be wary of guarantees

Only the university decides admission. Phrases such as "guaranteed place" or "recognition without problems" rest on no legal act and are rarely repeated in writing when asked.

Frequently asked questions

My school grades are weak. Is it worth applying?

It depends on the programme and the year. Where competition is light the leaving grade can be enough; on competitive programmes you need to place in the ranking. Only that year's announcement answers it.

I studied outside the EU. What extra is required?

Recognition of your secondary education plus legalisation and translation of the documents. Enrolment is not finalised until recognition is complete.

Can I apply to several universities at once?

Yes, the calendars are separate and do not exclude each other. The practical limit is document preparation time, since each institution wants its own set.
