Moving to Bulgaria: the pre-departure list
The most expensive mistakes in a move are made in the country you are leaving, not the one you are joining. A document is far harder to obtain once you have gone, and a certification that takes minutes on the spot takes weeks from abroad. This list covers what to close before departure; what happens after arrival is a separate article.

Documents to prepare at source
- Civil-status certificates for birth and marriage, in a multilingual or international format where available.
- Diplomas and transcripts — anything that might need recognition.
- A criminal record certificate, with the range of countries clarified in advance.
- Your driving licence and any professional qualification certificates.
- Your own copies of health records, kept as an administrative archive rather than as medical guidance.
Finish the legalisation chain before you leave
An apostille or consular legalisation is issued by the country that produced the document. Skipping this means the paper will be rejected on form in Bulgaria and the procedure restarts. Where to have translations made should follow the receiving country's accepted route — not every translation is recognised everywhere.

Belongings, vehicles and pets
The customs treatment of household goods differs fundamentally inside and outside the EU. Bringing a vehicle triggers its own chain of registration, roadworthiness and tax steps. Travelling with pets has its own rules and needs lead time. None of the three belongs in the final week, and the rules should be verified from official sources.

As an EU citizen, do I still need apostilles?
Within the EU there are arrangements that simplify the circulation of certain public documents, so an apostille is not always required. Check which route applies to each specific document rather than assuming one answer covers all.
Should I obtain documents well in advance?
Up to a point. Obtaining them from abroad later is expensive, but many documents must be current relative to the filing date, so ordering them far too early carries its own risk.
What about my electronic identity and online accounts?
Check whether you will retain access after changing phone number and address. Losing electronic identification complicates precisely the procedures that lie ahead of you.
