Two calendars, one file

Two periods run in parallel at renewal. The first is the document's: the expiry date printed on the card. The second is the ground's: whether the employment contract, the enrolment, the family link or the company activity still stands. Both must be alive for the permit to be extended. If the ground falls away while the card is still valid, the days left on the card protect nobody.

Preparation therefore starts not from the card's date but from the ground's renewal date. Someone whose contract ends in September must act in September even if the card runs to December.

The fourteen-day rule

According to Interior Ministry material, the request to extend residence is submitted no later than fourteen days before the permit expires, and extension applications are reviewed and resolved within fourteen days. The practical implication is that there is no buffer. A file lodged on the fourteenth day can, on a single missing document, produce a decision after the permitted period has already run out.

What changes in the file

A renewal is not a copy of the first application. The core documents look similar, but the authority now also assesses the period behind you: is your address registration current, has your insurance run without gaps, is the ground unchanged, how much time did you actually spend in the country. The documents that cause trouble at renewal are therefore rarely the ones from the first application; they are the records neglected over the past year.

Fees

The amendment to Tariff No. 4 provides, from 1 January 2026, a fee of 102.26 € for granting the right of continued residence for up to six months and 255.65 € where the period runs from six months to one year. The period you request therefore fixes the amount due; a shorter period looks cheaper but forces a second renewal inside the same year and costs more in time and money overall. Foreigners of Bulgarian origin benefit from a reduced rate under the tariff.

   Filing after expiry

   The basis of lawful residence weakens. This is not an automatic sanction, but it is a matter for the administration's assessment and it leaves a mark in the continuity record.

   A decision issued after expiry

   The days between the two dates may be scrutinised later, when long-term or permanent status is assessed. Keep the receipt showing your filing date.

   The ground has changed

   Then it is not an extension but a fresh application on the new ground. Moving from study to employment is the classic case.

   You are abroad

   The request is filed inside the country, at the unit for your place of residence. Do not schedule long trips into the renewal window.

   The card is lost

   Reporting the loss and issuing a replacement run separately from renewal and lengthen the calendar.

From renewal to permanent status

Renewal discipline shapes not only the current year but any future permanent residence application, where continuity is the spine of the file. On that side the Interior Ministry's procedure requires the application to be lodged in person and no later than three months before the permitted period of residence expires. The fourteen-day rhythm you get used to at renewal does not apply there; that window opens far earlier.
