Vehicle roadworthiness test in Bulgaria
A vehicle registered in Bulgaria may only be driven with a valid technical inspection. The test is carried out at licensed inspection stations, and the result is recorded in the central system. Drivers arriving from Turkey are usually surprised by the same detail: the inspection happens at private but supervised stations rather than at facilities run by the state itself.

What to bring
- The vehicle registration certificate, with the data and plate matching.
- A valid compulsory motor third-party liability policy; without it the inspection is not completed.
- Identification for whoever presents the vehicle, and an authorisation where needed.
- The vehicle itself: tyres, lights, wipers, brakes and exhaust decide the outcome before anything else.
What is checked
The inspection covers road safety and environmental performance: braking system, steering and suspension, lighting, tyre condition, glazing and mirrors, emissions, seat belts and body integrity. The result is recorded in a report and, on a pass, attached to the registration, so validity can also be seen during a roadside check.
How the interval is set
The interval depends on the type, age and use of the vehicle: a private car, a taxi and a passenger-carrying vehicle do not follow the same schedule. No periods are stated here because they are set in legislation and can change; the interval applying to your vehicle appears on your documents, and the current rule is published by the transport administration.
