The logic of the system first

In Sofia a ticket belongs to the system, not to a line. One document takes you onto the metro and onto a bus; only the way it is used differs. The metro is entered through a gate, where the document is read; on a bus, tram or trolleybus you validate at the device inside the vehicle. Confusing the two is the newcomer's most frequent mistake: boarding a surface vehicle and sitting down without validating means travelling without a ticket.

The second basic rule: for most documents, validity in Sofia is tied to time, not distance. Crossing the city costs no more than riding two stops; the difference lies in how many minutes or days your document is valid.

• •Centre for Urban Mobility offices — according to the municipality, transport documents are sold at all of the Centre's ticket offices. Electronic cards and season passes are handled there too.
• •Machines — ticket machines stand at metro stations and at major interchanges.
• •The validator in the vehicle — according to the municipality, a one-off transport document can also be bought with a bank card at the validator on board. So there is a way out for someone who boards without a ticket, but the action must be taken immediately on boarding, not „later“.
• •Loading a card — once you hold an electronic card, loading a new document onto it is the most practical route; you no longer hunt for an office before every journey.

Who travels at a reduced fare

According to Sofia Municipality, the Centre for Urban Mobility operates a special tariff policy for families, pupils, students, doctoral students, the elderly, people with disabilities, war veterans and children from social care homes. In addition, children up to seven years travel free. To use a reduced fare you present the relevant document and your card is registered in that category; the reduction attaches to the person, not to the ticket itself.

   In the metro: pass through the gate

   Entry is through a gate and the document is read there. Once you are through, your journey is recorded.

   On buses, trams and trolleybuses validation happens inside the vehicle. Do not postpone it — an inspector can board at the same stop you did.

   A validated document stays with you until you alight, to be shown on request. Do not throw away a paper ticket; keep the electronic card in your pocket.

   Watch the clock on a transfer ticket

   The right to transfer is tied to a period that runs from the first validation. Boarding after it has expired is a new journey.

   If you have no document at an inspection

   An unvalidated journey is penalised, and the penalty falls on the passenger. Explanations such as „it was charging automatically“ or „the card did not read“ change nothing where there is no validation record.

The four commonest mistakes

Most ticket penalties in Sofia come not from bad faith but from not knowing one detail of the system. Four of them recur in exactly the same shape.

• •I boarded but did not validate. On surface vehicles validation is not automatic; even with the document in your pocket, without validation there is no record. For the inspector, only the record exists.
• •I missed the transfer window. A transfer ticket's period runs from the first validation, not from the start of your journey. A coffee stop in the middle can use it all up.
• •I lent my card to a friend. A card in a reduced category is attached to the person; use by someone else can invalidate the journey and cost you the card.
• •I threw the document away immediately. After passing the gate or validating, the document stays with you for the whole journey and must be producible until you alight.

If the card is lost or stops reading

An electronic card is a physical object; it breaks, it goes missing, sometimes it simply stops reading. The right response is not to wait until the next journey but to go to a ticket office. Everything to do with the card — issue, loading, category registration and troubleshooting — runs through the Centre for Urban Mobility's offices.

   Report the problem at an office and have it recorded

   Saying „the card does not read“ is not enough; hand the card over and ask for the case to be registered. The record is the only route to recovering the value you loaded.

   Keep the receipt from loading

   The document you receive when loading a pass or a ticket is your only evidence if the card is lost. Photographing it and keeping it on your phone is the most practical option.

   If you are in a reduced category, bring your documents

   When a new card is issued the category is registered again; proof of enrolment, a disability decision or another supporting document may be required.

   Use single tickets until the new card arrives

   Do not travel without a document in the meantime; „my card is being processed“ is not a valid ground at an inspection.

Night transport

Sofia also runs night services; the municipality announces them itself and launches or extends them by season. The night network is a scaled-down version of the daytime one: fewer lines, less frequent services, but the city's main corridors are covered. If you are going out at night, know two things in advance — which line serves your district, and whether your document is valid on night services. Some multi-day documents are defined separately so as to include night transport.

• •A few days' visit — a multi-day document is the most practical; it saves hunting for a machine at every boarding.
• •A stay of a month or more — get an electronic card and load a monthly pass. One trip to an office, and the rest runs through the card.
• •Occasional use — a single or a transfer ticket is enough; it can also be bought with a bank card at the validator on board.
• •Family with children — children up to seven travel free; for a school-age child apply for the pupil fare.
• •Student or pensioner — apply with documents for the reduced category; the reduction attaches to the person, not the ticket.
