Sofia Airport to the city: metro, bus and taxi

First: which terminal are you in

Sofia Airport has two terminals and they are separate buildings. Terminal 2 is the larger one, and the metro station adjoins it. Terminal 1 is smaller, and some airlines operate from there. Your ticket states which terminal you land at; knowing that before you land means walking in the right direction from the moment you leave the gate. The metro: the most predictable option

The metro's advantage is predictability: it is unaffected by congestion and the journey time is constant. If you are travelling with luggage, check the station entrance and your exit in the centre in advance; at some stations stairs are unavoidable.

Buses: 84, 184 and 384

According to the airport, electric buses 84 and 184 provide a quick connection to the centre; line 384 also serves the airport. Tickets issued by the vending machine at Terminal 1 are valid on all three lines. The bus stops more often and is exposed to traffic; in exchange, it reaches corridors the metro does not.

At night, service N4 serves Terminal 2 and links the airport with key points in the central part of the city. Night frequencies are low; knowing the departure time in advance beats waiting in the terminal.

Tickets: where and how

   Deal with the ticket as soon as you have your luggage

   According to the airport, public transport tickets are sold at the urban mobility kiosks at the airport and from a vending machine in the public arrivals area of Terminal 1.

   For the metro, use the machine at the station

   There are ticket machines at Sofia Airport metro station. Some take banknotes and coins; according to the airport, one of them also accepts a credit card.

   If you carry a card, do not skip the validator

   On the bus the document is validated inside the vehicle. The metro is entered through a gate. The ticketing system is covered fully in a separate article.

   If you are heading out of Sofia, plan for Serdika

   According to the municipality, a passenger from the airport can change at Serdika and reach the Central Bus Station and Central Railway Station in under half an hour.

   Instead of a single ticket from the airport, a document matched to the length of your stay removes the scramble on day one.

Taking luggage on the metro: four practical notes

The reason passengers hesitate to use the airport line is usually luggage. In Sofia that objection looks larger than it is; a few details known in advance make the decision easy.

• •Think about getting out, not getting in. Reaching the airport station is easy; the real question is which station and which exit you use in the centre. Some exits have stairs only.
• •Do not board at peak hour. Getting into a carriage with a large case during the morning or evening peak is hard on you and on everyone else. If your flight falls at that time, waiting for the next train is often more comfortable.
• •Keep the case in the corner, not by the door. The space in front of the doors is for boarding and alighting; a case tucked into a corner helps both balance and order.
• •Leave slack if you are changing lines. There is a walk between lines, and luggage lengthens it. If you are changing at Serdika, count a few extra minutes.

Three common mistakes when planning the airport connection

   Assuming „a hotel near the airport is more practical“

   Because M4 links the centre to the airport in 18-20 minutes, staying in the centre suits most itineraries better than staying near the airport. The airport area is an advantage only for very early flights.

   Underestimating a night arrival

   The metro finishes at 24:00. A flight landing after midnight complicates both the journey and hotel check-in; when buying a ticket, do not choose the arrival time on price alone.

   Looking for a ticket outside the terminal

   Tickets are sold at the kiosks and the machine in the terminal. Sorting it out before you leave is faster than queuing at the station — especially if you are travelling as a group or a family.

   Not planning the return

   The way in is easy to find, the way back is easy to forget. On the day you arrive, note once which line you will use to return and how you will count back from your departure time.

Taxis and private transfers

There is a taxi service at the terminal exit, ordered through the airport's authorised desk. No taxi fare appears on this page: tariffs change, and an unverified figure sets a false expectation. Three practical rules, however, always hold:

• •Order the taxi from the authorised point in the terminal. Haggling with someone who intercepts you in the hall asking „taxi?“ can produce a price with nothing to do with the airport taxi tariff.
• •Make sure the meter is running. Fixed-price offers made before the route is clear usually work against you.
• •Read the tariff sticker on the door. In Sofia taxis display their tariff on the vehicle; reading the figure before you get in is easier than arguing after you get out.
• •Weigh the alternative. The metro reaches the centre in a constant time; a taxi's advantage is luggage and door-to-door delivery, not speed.

Travelling from the city to the airport

The reverse direction uses the same options but plans differently. With the metro the time is constant, so counting back is easy: from your flight time subtract the time you want to spend at the airport and the 18-20 minute ride, then add the walk to the station. With a bus or a taxi you must leave a margin for traffic — Sofia's morning and evening peaks widen that margin substantially.

For early morning flights, remember that the metro starts at 05:30. If your flight is early, the metro may not get you there in time; the night service or a taxi is then the only option, and that has to be planned the evening before.
