Finding work in Bulgaria: how the market is entered

Job hunting in Bulgaria starts with your legal category, not with job boards. EU, EEA and Swiss nationals have the same labour-market access as Bulgarians and can apply directly; third-country nationals normally depend on an employer who files the permit case. That single distinction decides which channels are genuinely open to you.

Your status sets the procedure

EU, EEA and Swiss citizens need no separate work permit — only a residence registration. For third-country nationals, the right to work and the right to stay are handled together: the usual route is an application filed by the employer with the Employment Agency (Агенция по заетостта), decided alongside the migration file. Separate regimes exist for the EU Blue Card, seasonal work and intra-corporate transfers. Establish which regime applies before you apply for roles, because it determines whether an employer can realistically hire you at all.

Temporary protection is a distinct route

Labour-market access for people granted temporary protection is regulated separately from the general third-country procedure. If that is your status, check the specific conditions with the competent authority rather than assuming the general rules apply.

Channels that produce results

  • EURES, the EU mobility network — the most direct route for EU and EEA nationals.
  • Labour offices (бюро по труда) of the Employment Agency: registration is free and also opens access to training and employment schemes.
  • Company career pages: technology firms and shared-service centres in Sofia and Plovdiv hire mostly through their own sites.
  • Sector concentration: multilingual service centres, Black Sea seasonal tourism, transport and logistics have visibly more openings for newcomers.
  • Private recruitment agencies must be registered as employment intermediaries; verify the registration before engaging.

Qualifications and regulated professions

Academic recognition of a foreign degree is a separate procedure handled by NACID. For regulated professions — doctors, nurses, teachers, lawyers — recognition of the diploma is not enough; the competent ministry or professional body must also recognise the professional qualification. EU-issued qualifications benefit from mutual-recognition rules that shorten the path considerably. Certified translation, and legalisation or apostille depending on the issuing country, are requested in nearly every file, so start collecting them weeks ahead.

Avoiding recruitment fraud

No legitimate intermediary charges you upfront for a job

A registered employment intermediary does not take advance fees from a jobseeker in exchange for a promised placement. Walk away from anyone asking for money before a contract exists, communicating only through a messaging app, refusing to show a company registration, or declining to put terms in writing. Check the employer in the commercial register and the intermediary in the Employment Agency register.

Once you have an offer

  1. Insist on a written contract

Employment contracts in Bulgaria are written and registered by the employer with the revenue administration.
  2. Obtain your personal number

Payroll, banking and health-insurance records cannot be linked without a personal identification number.
  3. Bank account and address registration

Salaries are paid by transfer, and address registration is a precondition for most later administrative steps.
  4. Verify your insurance record

You can check what your employer has declared yourself through the electronic services of the NSSI and the revenue agency.

Frequently asked questions

Do EU citizens need a work permit for Bulgaria?

No. EU, EEA and Swiss nationals access the labour market on equal terms with Bulgarian citizens. What remains is the residence registration, which is an administrative formality rather than a permission to work.

Can an employer start the permit process before I move?

In the general third-country route the employer initiates the case while the candidate is still abroad, and the outcome is tied to the residence procedure. Being physically present in Bulgaria on a short stay does not speed this up.

Is my degree recognised automatically?

Only where EU law provides for automatic recognition. Otherwise academic recognition runs through NACID, and regulated professions require a further decision on the professional qualification itself.
