Two decisions, two institutions

Inside the EU and outside it

For certain professional qualifications obtained in a member state, the Union operates a facilitated recognition route, and the medical profession falls within it. That makes assessment of a Bulgarian degree in another EU country relatively predictable, without removing the receiving country's language and registration requirements. Outside the EU the process is entirely national and the degree is assessed under domestic law. The sentence "an EU degree works everywhere" is therefore false.

When to start

   Before enrolling

   Check whether the institution and programme are accepted in the country where you intend to work, and keep the written answer.

   Verify accreditation

   The status in the НАЦИД registers is the foundation on which every later recognition step rests.

   Collect documents during your studies

   Syllabuses, credit transcripts and placement records form the core of the file and are hard to obtain years later.

   Complete certification at graduation

   Apostille and official translation of the diploma and transcript; the receiving authority defines the required form.

   Plan the professional access step separately

   Even with academic recognition, an additional assessment under health legislation may apply.

Three expensive assumptions

• •"The agency guaranteed recognition" — recognition is an administrative act and cannot be guaranteed by a private party.
• •"I studied in the EU, so there will be no issue" — the facilitation applies within the Union and does not travel to a third country.
• •"I will collect the paperwork later" — the syllabus of a discontinued programme often cannot be reconstructed.
