The state channel: the Employment Agency

Employment policy is delivered by the Employment Agency and its local branches, the labour offices. The electronic jobs exchange is public and browsing adverts needs no registration; registering at a labour office, however, is a mandatory condition for using the agency's services — placement support, counselling, training and employment programmes.

Across the EU: EURES

For citizens of the EU, the European Economic Area and Switzerland, the second official channel is EURES, a Europe-wide pool of vacancies and network of advisers. Adverts there are fed in by member states' public employment services, which makes their origin traceable — a useful filter against anonymous listings.

Commercial job boards

Most adverts appear on commercial sites. Long-established names on the Bulgarian market include jobs.bg, zaplata.bg, rabota.bg and JobTiger, alongside international professional networks and companies' own careers pages. Technology firms and shared service centres in Sofia and Plovdiv often recruit directly through their own sites.

Check the agency register before engaging an intermediary

Private firms carrying out job-placement intermediation are subject to registration. The competent authority decides within 14 days of receiving the documents, and intermediaries holding a valid certificate are listed in a public electronic register accessible through the Employment Agency's website. That register is the only reliable way to verify an intermediary — not the firm's own marketing.

• •Does it cover placement with foreign employers — those contracts are registered separately.
• •Does it give you a written contract — a verbal arrangement cannot be proved later.

Recurring scam patterns

• •Money requested up front — file fees, visa packages and similar.
• •Contact only through a messaging app, with no company address or corporate email.
• •A hidden employer — "a large European company" with no name attached.
• •Implausibly high pay offered for unskilled work.
• •Gross versus net left vague between the conversation and the contract.
• •Prepaid accommodation and travel demanded before departure, common in seasonal work.
• •Starting without a contract — in Bulgaria the employment contract is concluded in writing before the first working day.

Reading an advert properly

The language reality

Most adverts are published in Bulgarian and the application process runs in Bulgarian. English-language adverts concentrate in international service centres, technology companies and tourism. Job hunting without Bulgarian is possible but narrows the field sharply — the public sector, healthcare, education and customer-facing roles remain effectively closed.
