Did the euro raise prices? Where official data is
This page does not give a single official figure for how much prices rose after the euro, because we could not confirm one from the Eurostat series. What we can do from official sources is explain the rules and how you can check a price tag against a receipt yourself.

How prices were converted
According to the Q&A of the Bulgarian National Bank (Българска народна банка, BNB), old prices are converted at the official fixed rate and the result is rounded to two decimals by the mathematical rule: if the third decimal is below five the second stays unchanged, if it is five or more the second goes up by one. So the only difference the rule allows is cent-level rounding.
The dual-display period
The same BNB page says prices had to be shown in both currencies from 8 August 2025 to 8 August 2026; from 9 August 2026 retailers may show euro only. That is why today (October 2026) you see a single price on labels. Photos of labels taken during the dual period can serve as evidence in a later objection.
What BNB says
Where the actual effect is measured
- Eurostat's HICP page offers an inflation measure comparable across countries; data are monthly and annual and broken down by detailed consumption categories.
- To compare Bulgaria with other euro area countries, use this series rather than a single monthly number.
- The official euro portal evroto.bg points consumers to the Commission for Consumer Protection (Комисия за защита на потребителите, КЗП).
A practical check when you shop
Photograph the label
Take the shelf price and the receipt in one frame or one after the other, with the date and store name visible.Tell rounding from error
A difference of a few cents can come from rounding. An unexplained gap between label and receipt is grounds for objection.Store first, then КЗП
Ask for a correction at the till or from the manager; if that fails, file a written complaint with КЗП. See the commission's own site for the format.
