The school system in Bulgaria

Schooling in Bulgaria is regulated by the Ministry of Education and Science (МОН) and delivered by schools run together with the municipalities. For a family arriving with a child, three questions matter: which stage the child enters, where enrolment happens, and how the language gap is closed.

How the stages are divided

The system starts before school. Kindergarten (детска градина) is optional in the earliest years, but the preparatory groups are part of compulsory pre-school education and enrolment goes through the municipality. Basic education follows, split into a primary stage and a lower-secondary stage. At the end of the lower-secondary stage the pupil receives a basic education certificate and moves on to upper secondary.

Upper secondary is not uniform. There are general and profiled schools, language schools (езикова гимназия), mathematics and science schools, and vocational schools (професионална гимназия). Entry to language and mathematics schools is based on national assessment results and is competitive in the larger cities. Vocational schools award a professional qualification alongside the diploma, which is a meaningful route for a pupil who intends to enter the labour market directly.

Compulsory schooling and enrolment

  • Education is compulsory up to a set age; the exact limit and the scope of pre-school are defined in the legislation МОН applies.
  • Enrolment normally runs through the municipality's electronic system, where address, siblings already enrolled and distance to the school affect ranking.
  • State and municipal schools are free, and there is a support scheme for textbooks and some materials.
  • For a pupil arriving from a foreign school, recognition of prior education is a separate procedure handled by the regional education directorates.

State school or private school

State and municipal schools are free and follow the same national education standards countrywide. Private schools charge fees and typically offer smaller classes, intensive foreign-language teaching or an international programme; Sofia and Varna also have schools teaching in English. The decisive question is not the fee but the child's next step: if university in Bulgaria is the plan, the national curriculum and the state matriculation exam (държавен зрелостен изпит) lead there more directly.

What a child who does not speak Bulgarian does

Teaching is in Bulgarian. Pupils arriving from abroad are entitled to language support and an integration arrangement: additional Bulgarian lessons, inclusion hours and, where appropriate, placement in a lower year. Practice varies between schools, so the question to ask at the enrolment meeting is blunt and specific — what concrete support does this school provide for a pupil whose first language is not Bulgarian, how many hours a week, and who delivers it.

Belonging comes before language

Experienced parents judge the first year by whether the child is talking to classmates, not by marks. Once communication starts, the language follows quickly; the reverse order rarely works.

Stages and exams change

Year numbering, the national assessment calendar and the compulsory schooling age are all set by legislation that changes. This page gives no year numbers or dates — МОН is the authority on the current structure.

Frequently asked questions

Can I enrol my child mid-year?

Yes, enrolment during the school year is possible when a family relocates. The school is assigned according to available places by the municipality or the regional education directorate.

Is my child's foreign school report valid here?

Not directly. Which stage the prior education corresponds to is established through a recognition procedure run by the regional structure of МОН, and it should be started before enrolment.

Does an international school hurt admission to a Bulgarian university?

It does not hurt, but it changes the route. The state matriculation exam feeds directly into local admission, whereas a pupil from a different programme adds a diploma recognition step.
