Burgas city guide: lakes and a working port

Burgas is a major port and industrial city on Bulgaria's Black Sea coast. The three lakes surrounding it place the city directly on one of Europe's busiest bird migration routes. For anyone arriving overland from Türkiye, Burgas is also the first large coastal city after the border.

A city built between lakes

The first thing that sets Burgas apart from other Bulgarian cities is water: the city spreads across the narrow strip of land between the sea and its lakes.

  • Atanasovsko Lake — shallow and saline, known for its salt pans and for the therapeutic use of brine and mud.
  • Burgas Lake (Vaya) — one of the largest natural lakes in the country, its reed beds sheltering waterbirds.
  • Mandra Lake — to the south, and together with the protected Poda site among the best places for observation.

Via Pontica: the birds' motorway

One of the great migration routes from northern Europe to Africa, the Via Pontica, passes directly over the Burgas lakes. Storks, pelicans and raptors move along this corridor in large flocks each spring and autumn. The city is therefore in the calendar of birdwatchers as well as holidaymakers, and the protected areas have observation towers and visitor centres.

Protected area means rules

The lakes and surrounding wetlands are protected. There are restrictions on drones, on leaving marked paths and on approaching during the breeding season; check current rules with the site's own visitor centre or with the municipality.

Port, industry and work

Burgas has one of the country's largest cargo ports, and the major oil refinery just outside the city defines the industrial character of the region. As a result, despite being on the sea, the city's economy does not depend on tourism alone: logistics, chemicals, maintenance and energy provide employment year round. In winter that is what clearly separates the city from the resort settlements along the coast.

The Sea Garden and two faces of the coast

The Sea Garden is the main public space running from the centre down to the water; as the city's oldest park it is the address for walks, events and summer concerts. Burgas is also a gateway to two different stretches of coast: to the north, the old town of Nessebar on the UNESCO World Heritage list together with the large resort complexes, and to the south a quieter shore running from Sozopol towards the Strandzha hills.

  • It is the closest large Bulgarian coastal city to the Turkish border, and the road link is heavily used in summer.
  • A Turkish-speaking community lives in the region, which eases everyday communication.
  • The airport is busy in summer and has a limited winter timetable; in winter routing via Sofia is often the more sensible plan.
  • The motorway axis connects Burgas to Sofia, which makes domestic travel predictable.

Frequently asked questions

Is Burgas only a summer city?

No. The port, the refinery and logistics operate year round, so the city has a working economy in winter as well. Seasonality is felt far more strongly in the resort settlements around it.

Which season suits birdwatching?

Migration intensifies in spring and autumn. Because the dates shift by species and by year, the most reliable approach is to ask at the visitor centres of the protected sites.

Does industry affect air quality in the city?

The proximity of the port and the refinery is a subject that is measured regularly and debated publicly. Measurement data are published by the national environmental institutions, and it is reasonable to consult them when choosing a neighbourhood.
