Transferring money between Bulgaria and Türkiye

Technically, moving money between the two countries is easy; the difficulty is knowing which channel falls under which rules. Three questions need separating: the transfer itself (bank or licensed payment institution), the currency (euro, lira), and declaration obligations. Each is covered below without quoting amounts, and with the competent authorities named.

This is not financial advice

No fees, exchange spreads or tax rates appear here; they differ between institutions and change over time. For your own case ask your bank, for licensing status the Bulgarian National Bank, and for the tax side the National Revenue Agency.

Currency and exchange risk

Bulgaria's official currency is the euro; the country joined the euro area on 1 January 2026. For anyone whose income is in euro that removes exchange risk, but not against the Turkish lira — any operation in lira depends on market conditions at the moment of the transaction. Information on how accounts and the payment infrastructure work is followed through the official euro portal and the Bulgarian National Bank.

Channels

Whichever channel you use, information on the identity of the parties and the source of funds may be requested — a routine requirement of anti-money-laundering legislation.
ChannelWhen it fitsWhat to watch
Bank transfer (IBAN)Regular transfers that must be documentedRecipient name must match the account holder exactly
Licensed payment institutionSmall, frequent transfersVerify the institution appears in the supervisor's register
Carrying cashWhere unavoidableA declaration obligation may arise at the border

Cash declaration at the border

A common regime applies to travellers entering or leaving the European Union: cash reaching or exceeding the set threshold must be declared to the competent customs office. Under the Union act in force, that threshold is EUR 10,000 or the equivalent in other currencies, and the scope can extend to other carriers of value listed in the act. There are exceptions and application details, so read the Union's customs pages before travelling and ask the competent customs office. Failure to declare carries penalties.

Practical steps

  1. Check recipient details character by character

IBAN, name and bank must agree. A mismatch leads to the transfer being returned and delayed.
  2. Write a meaningful payment reference

A clear reference — family support, rent, service fee — is a pre-emptive answer to later questions. Vague wording invites requests for further documents.
  3. Keep the paperwork

Statements and contracts are evidence for both the bank and the tax authority, particularly around relocation, property purchase or company capital.
  4. Ask about tax separately

A transfer is not income as such, but the nature of the sum — rent, remuneration, gift, inheritance — can create an obligation. Clarify this with the revenue agency or a tax adviser.

This is not legal or financial advice

Frequently asked questions

Is receiving funds from abroad into a Bulgarian account unrestricted?

Bank transfers are routine. The bank may request identity details and information on the source of funds — that is a legal requirement rather than an obstacle. For larger sums, consult your bank in advance.

What currency is my Bulgarian account held in?

Euro. The authoritative sources on how accounts and charges work are the euro portal and the Bulgarian National Bank, not commercial notices or social media commentary.

Is carrying cash cheaper than a transfer?

Cost comparison is outside this article, but carrying cash brings extra dimensions: the declaration obligation, loss or theft risk, and difficulty of proof. For larger sums the banking channel leaves a traceable record, which helps if evidence is needed later.
